I didn’t like the alligator clips that came on some of the flowers from Michaels, (pictured at 3:00, below,) they stuck out from the surface of the bag, snagged on things, and you could see them from the side. They were easy enough to pop off, though. I repaced them with “Gimme Gators” from Create for Less. I removed the calyx, and snipped off part of the stem, leaving enough to hold the petals together:

I used Loctite gel super glue because it would bond to metal and fabric. It would also sit “atop” the petals instead of being absorbed by them.

I made sure there was glue next to the stem piece and on the gator clip. I thought that would insure that the petals stayed together. I found out later that I was wrong, and now I put a couple of dabs of glue between each layer of petals, as well.

I also tried attaching a quilting safety pin. That worked well, but it took a long time to dry. The turquoise flower is harder to remove from the purse than the ones with gators.

All in all, I am pretty pleased with my results. I’m already getting compliments!

I bought this pack of craft needles at Walmart recently. There are tapestry and chenilles, quilting, etc. If you punch away the cardboard hang tag and leave the rest on the back, there’s a guide to each type and size needle. The clear top slides around and has a tiny hole through which you can dispense the needles and put them back. I don’t remember what I paid, but it wasn’t much. I may go back and buy another set for my embroidery box. (This one currently resides in my sewing room.)

Finished at last! My sore throat doesn’t want to let me sleep, so I might as well sit up and stitch!

What I learned during this project:
1.) Dupioni takes a beating and pills under alot of hand work.
2.) I need something (like the Tiger Tape I bought) to keep my stitches even (though the perfectly spaced stitches I’ve been admiring online actually don’t look “done by hand.”)
3.) My beadwork is too tight, so the beads shift and become uneven. I also need to remember to stitch through them twice to reinforce them.
4.) Metallic printed quilting cotton looks good, but doesn’t have a lot of body, so it wrinkles easily. I don’t dare take a regular iron to it, maybe my Clover mini iron.
5.) This silkie was a good choice. The colors are fairly deep. I increased the saturation and chose “best” for the printing. (The girl is also holding a bird, and as crazy as it sounds, birds have come to me for help on several occasions, no joke.)
6.) Velvet was a good choice for the part covering the binding. It feels good in my hand while I’m reading.
7.) Take out basting stitches before stitching up the bottom opening.
8.) The pattern I drafted fit!
