Playing with “Paint”

Playing with “Paint”
Playing with “Paint”
Here’s another nifty item I ordered:

It’s a CD of Victorian Religious Images, and it is lovely. It’s from Lunagirl and can be found, along with other image collections, on etsy.

I love Brandi Hussey’s use of photoshop to pull a palette from a photograph. She has a tutorial on her blog, but my Photoshop software came preloaded on my old Gateway desktop, and when the hard drive died, so did the Photoshop.

I’d used the eyedropper tool in “PAINT” before, so I set out to see if I could use it to “pull a palette.” Before I selected “Open with Paint” from the right hand menu, I made a copy of the image for editing. I enhanced the colors, also, by using the photo editing software on my laptop to increase the saturation of the colors:

Then I used the rectangle, eyedropper, and fill bucket tools to “pull a palette:”

It’s not nearly as professional looking as Brandi’s, but I was just playing, anyway.
Some of the cross images from my Lunagirl disc show ribbons that, to me, are in need of words:

I used the text tool (A) from Paint to add “Holy Bible” to this one:

I am pretty pleased with my “PAINT” play, today!

I fused three silkies onto Bible cover foundations. The Wonder Under worked great. It was the heavy adhesive kind.

Then, I auditioned fabrics to go with the angel. She was the easiest.
Next, I scrounged through my stash of embellishments for baubles, trims and threads. I packed the angel and her accoutrements in a tote bag that is now my “project bag” for her. I think I’ll work on her first because she looks like the daughter of a friend of mine. Maybe, I can gift her!

The fabrics to surround Rembrandt’s “Head of Christ” were next. I think they are most beautiful.

I had thought “The Good Shepherd” protrait of Jesus would be the easiest to choose coordinating colors for, but it was the toughest. Since I’m way too sick to go to church in the morning, I’ll save that to do then, as an act of worship.

Today’s Experiment

This is not the best photo in the world, but I just want to document what I’ve done. I printed four of the “Bible cover” images on silk charmeuse. Before I printed them, I edited them by increasing the saturation of color for each image. It was too much for the “Three Mary’s.” They look like they’ve found the fiery furnace instead of the empty tomb.

I traced and cut out a 8,1/2″x11″ piece of Wonder Under that I’m going to fuse to the back of the silk after I remove it’s paper backing. Then I’ll cut the images apart and fuse them to the muslin Bible cover foundations. I’ll have to be careful with my iron, not to burn the silk (though that might enhance the look of the “Three Mary’s!”)

Biblical Images

Today was my first day back at home since I made my “mornings are mine” resolution. Today, I searched for images to make silkies for my crazyquilt Bible covers.

These are from my copy of Dover’s, 120 Great Paintings of the Life of Jesus. The first one is Rembrandt Van Rijn’s, “Head of Christ.” The second is Bouguereau’s, “The Three Marys at the Tomb.”
I looked through my collection of images from the Dover Sampler, too:
I also searched for my printer-ready, paper-backed pieces of silk. I have two, so I need to order more. I need my Microsoft Picture It publishing software so I can print and manipulate these images.  I found the discs and loaded them on my new laptop. Apparently, this software is not compatible with Windows Vista NOR Windows 7. Aaaargh!
Tonight, I searched for free Bible clip art and found old illustrated Bible plates and study cards. They are so old they are in the public domain. ‘Makes me feel ancient, because I’m pretty sure I remember some of them from Sunday School as a child!
These two are from www.thebiblerevival.com.

I Love this Fabric!

It came from Evening Star Designs in Raleigh, NC. They sell fabric and embellishments for crazy quilting. (They are also now carrying quality quilter’s cottons.) This is a patterned velvet. I used a scrap of it in Mama’s Bible cover. I photographed it so I can contact Evening Star and request more.

What I love about their website/store is that you can buy sample packs of fancy fabrics VERY reasonably. You can even request packs of colors you choose! Here’s the link: http://www.eveningstardesigns.citymax.com/

I Finally Finished Mama’s Bible Cover!

I Finally Finished Mama’s Bible Cover!

I have been babysitting my grandson, PJ (Peter James) so I’ve only managed a little crafting.

However, I did get Mama’s Bible cover done in time for her birthday (Aug. 26.) My dad died in 2002 and Mama had been carrying the Bible he was given for attending Sunday School for 13 years without missing a Sunday! The old cover was ragged and worn, and Mama put it up, fearing it would be ruined. The cover I made her is for that Bible.
She carried it last Sunday and the ladies in her Sunday School class loved it!

I finished my Bible cover!

I did the beadwork by hand, and there is a small
amount of silk ribbon embroidery. The straps and
bookmark are gold organza ribbon.
I think I might have gone too far with the bead embellishment. The fabric is beautiful enough to stand on its own, as you can see from the back.
I am pretty proud of it, however. I made the pattern myself using my AutoCad software.
